Unlucky breaks costly for Thunderbirds

The Missisquoi girls’ hockey team faced a number of unlucky breaks during its game at Spaulding on Wednesday.

Some tough bounces were costly for the Thunderbirds, as they came up on the short end of a 5-2 decision against Spaulding.

“It wasn’t just the five clear breakaways that we had,” said veteran forward Olivia Thayer. “We hit posts, had good deflections go just wide, shots that hit the goalie when she didn’t even see the shot, pucks bounce over sticks in front of open nets, we just couldn’t catch a break.”

Spaulding, on the other hand, got five goals, four of them unassisted, from Jessica Scott. She scored late in the first and had two goals in each of the final two periods. She would work her way into the slot, using her long reach and protecting the puck until she could use her quick and accurate wrist shot.

Callie Parks had the first clear breakaway early in the first. “I took it from their defenseman at our blue line,” said Parks. “I managed to pull away and got a shot off that hit the goalie in the chest.”

Adrianna Dostie picked her way through the Tide defense but goalie Maddie Pietzer stuffed her shot.

At the end of the first period, Thayer had her second clear break but she couldn’t connect either.

Thayer got some redemption in the third period by scoring two goals. The first was a goal mouth shot off an Alyssa Audet pass and the second was when Renee Bouchard sent her in and she batted the rebound past Pietzer.

MVU goalie Mikayla Hull was solid making 15 saves, the lion’s share off Scott’s stick. Pietzer was busier making 22 stops.

“This was one of those games where the other team’s best player beat us,” commented coach Wynn Paradee. “Over the years we haven’t done a good enough job of shutting those people down. The team played well and we were in a position to score quite a few but didn’t finish. Still you can’t have one player score five goals and expect to win.”

Spaulding goes to 2-0 and MVU drops to 2-1. The Thunderbirds play an important division game against Rice on Saturday.
